Our positive birth affirmations will take your mind from negative to positive, ensuring you feel powerful, capable and ready for labour.

Whisper them, scream them, sing them, repeat them!

Positive affirmations assist with reducing fear and anxiety while encouraging trust and belief in yourself.

Giving birth is physically and emotionally exhausting, so the impact of thinking positively cannot be understated. Positive thinking will empower you, get you in the right mental state and give you strength during labour.

Positive affirmations are backed by science and reprogram the brain to attract a more positive response. Essentially, affirmations are positive sentences, phrases or mantras that you repeat, read, memorise or listen to leading up to and during labour.

Your brain is like a computer and can be programmed so you can consciously control your thoughts to focus on positive outcomes. By regularly repeating your positive birth affirmations, your subconscious mind will start to believe your new positive thoughts as reality. Affirmations will help you modify existing mental concepts and form new ones.

Our mind is our most incredible tool during labour, so our goal is to Infuse your delivery with positive self-talk. That’s why I have created free printable positive birth affirmations, so you can download them onto your phone, or print them for labour.

Being relaxed in labour means your body can work optimally. Trusting your body and relaxing allows the natural hormones that help your labour progress (oxytocin) and ‘natural pain-relief hormones’ (endorphins) to flow abundantly.

Negative thoughts can create stress resulting in prolonged and uncomfortable labour. Stress produces cortisol, which interferes with your natural pain relievers, oxytocin and endorphins.

Powerful birth affirmations can act as pain relief by helping you to relax and stay calm.

Choosing Your Affirmations

Not all our positive birth affirmations will resonate with you. My suggestion is for you to pick out a few that you believe so that you can generate enough emotion to give them momentum.

The affirmations you choose should feel authentic and right and connect with you. Perhaps start with five or six and re-evaluate them as you get used to them.

Choose affirmations that feel calming and empowering and focus on your ability to manage your birth. You can also visit our list of stay at home mom apps for a review of the I am: Daily Affirmations app.

Affirmations should be spoken in the present tense as if they are already confirmed. Use statements that start with “I am…” or “I can…”. And avoiding words such as “I am going to…” or “I am trying to…”.

Below is an example of a thought pattern that can be reprogrammed using a positive affirmation.

“I can’t do this, and I am scared. It’s too hard.”

And with a positive affirmation:

“I trust my body. I am strong. I can do this.”

If the affirmations listed don’t feel right for you, you can try creating some of your own.

Use the examples below to help you develop your positive birth affirmations, including alternatives in case your birth doesn’t go as planned. When writing your affirmations, a general rule of thumb is to ensure you write them in the most positive way possible. Other tips include using the present tense, aligning them with your birth plan and ensuring they feel believable to you.

The more you can believe your affirmations, the more powerful they will become.

How To Use Affirmations

We suggest you write your positive birth affirmations on colourful paper pieces as neurologists believe visually stimulating yourself has a more significant effect on your brain. Many people put them on their bathroom mirrors to remind themselves throughout the day.

You can practice your affirmations in front of the mirror, looking yourself in the eye if it feels comfortable. Another option is to record yourself saying them and then listen to your recording.

Wherever you choose to put your affirmations, try to view them multiple times per day.

Before you commence your affirmation practice, you may like to slow down and focus on your breathing to induce a state of tranquillity. By slowing down for a few minutes and concentrating on your breathing, you can improve the impact your positive birth affirmations will have.

Here is a simple breathing exercise for you to try. Breathe in through your nose to a relaxed count of four. Hold your breath for four seconds, and then gradually exhale to the count of four. Repeat.

Try this now; you will be surprised by the instant benefits you feel even after two rounds. You can use this breathing exercise to induce a calmer state throughout the day.

Take the affirmations you have selected and spend three to five minutes saying them, listening to them or writing them down twice a day. Repeat each affirmation ten times.

Remain attentive and mindful as you say your affirmations. Take your time, breathe, relax and try to believe what you are saying. Imagine yourself in labour as you say your affirmations.

Be consistent, practising your affirmations every day.

When using your affirmations while in labour, you can print them out and laminate them or put your device in a clear plastic Ziploc bag.
